Powerful Beyond Measure: Taming the Mind

I don't know about you, but I exist in an mystical realm of constant inner dialogue. That which I recite, I become.

That which I envision, I seek.

And that which I dream, I live.

And my dreams are big. I want to be remembered for small victories and great compassion. I want to challenge people to conquer their fears and in so, conquer my own.

But like so many before me and surely like many of you reading this now, it's a constant grapple for glory; a daily battle to tame my temptations and fuel my passions to burn the proper flame.

I'm convinced the only person who can ever stop me--well--is me. And often, the daily grind can wear me down just enough that I start to kick my own ass.

When the sea of conscious becomes a storm of sanity I look outside myself, to help me, pick myself back up. And I find revival laced within a song, ingrained within the spine of a book or whispered in the wisdom of authors past.

This is a reminder that we are powerful beyond measure. And my hope is that you claim a mental mixtape of confident curiosity and steadfast courage to empower the greatest you possible.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us.

Telling myself it’s not as hard, hard, hard as it seems.

It’s only after we’ve lost everything that we’re free to do anything.

Words are pale shadows of forgotten names. As names have power, words have power. Words can light fires in the minds of men. Words can wring tears from the hardest hearts. There are seven words that will make a person love you. There are ten words that will break a strong man’s will. But a word is nothing but a painting of a fire. A name is the fire itself.
— Patrick Rothfuss
After all these years, I refuse to believe joy costs something, or we have to get on a plane to find it, that it has to happen on our vacation, and that dreams can’t come true on a Tuesday...And when I reach that final minute, that final day, I won’t think about shitty bosses or what happened on Facebook. I’ll remember riding my bike through the city streets at night, gravel roads that stretch on forever and all the highs and lows of family...I try to collect moments. I step back and watch the movie that is my life for just a second, because it’s easy to miss the good stuff, the magic, when it happens. But I try not to. I try really hard to realize it when it’s amazing, and even when it’s not...We all have dreams, but they don’t mean much if we don’t act on them, if we put them in a drawer we label “Someday,” for when we think we’ll have more time. I try to get out there, to go to amazing places, to have incredible conversations with incredible people. I think it all adds up somewhere. And when it does, you’re not doing something. You’re being something. And what I want to be is happy, and excited, and inspired.

Keep close to Nature’s heart... and break clear away, once in awhile, and climb a mountain or spend a week in the woods. Wash your spirit clean.

I am sick and tired of people who are living on the B-list.
They’re waiting to be famous and they’re wondering why they do this.
And I know I’m not the one who is habitually optimistic,
but I’m the one who’s got the microphone here so just remember this:

Life is about love, last minutes and lost evenings,
about fire in our bellies and furtive little feelings,
and the aching amplitudes that set our needles all a-flickering,
and help us with remembering that the only thing that’s left to do is live.
— Frank Turner
...the sea’s only gifts are harsh blows and, occasionally, the chance to feel strong. Now, I don’t know much about the sea, but I do know that that’s the way it is here. And I also know how important it is in life not necessarily to be strong but to feel strong, to measure yourself at least once, to find yourself at least once in the most ancient of human conditions, facing blind, deaf stone alone, with nothing to help you but your own hands and your own head...
— Primo Levi
So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, conformity, and conservatism, all of which may appear to give one peace of mind, but in reality nothing is more damaging to the adventurous spirit within a man than a secure future. The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.

I’ve been to Hollywood
I’ve been to Redwood
I crossed the ocean for a heart of gold.
I’ve been in my mind,
It’s such a fine line
That keeps me searching for a heart of gold.
— Neil Young
As a single footstep will not make a path on the earth, so a single thought will not make a pathway in the mind. To make a deep physical path, we walk again and again. To make a deep mental path, we must think over and over the kind of thoughts.
— Thoreau
Endure, Master Wayne. Take it. They’ll hate you for it, but that’s the point of Batman, he can be the outcast. He can make the choice that no one else can make, the right choice.
